A new chapter begins!

Life has a way of continuing the story even when one chapter comes to an end. Today, I begin a new one at Bupa Group, joining as Head of Engineering at Bupa Capability Centre (BCC), India.

And what a warm welcome from the BCC team!

Whenever we start something new, we bring assumptions, experiences, and a collection of things we know—and many things we don’t. A new beginning is also an opportunity to pause, learn, unlearn, and look at familiar problems with fresh eyes.

So, before getting too deep into the journey, I wanted to reflect on why Bupa, what I have discovered so far, and what I hope to contribute.

Getting to know Bupa

Bupa has an almost 80-year history in healthcare. Founded in 1947 as the British United Provident Association, it began when 17 associations came together with a shared ambition to provide public healthcare.

In India, many people may know Bupa for insurance business through its earlier association with Max Bupa and its subsequent presence through Niva Bupa. But it is an international healthcare organisation operating across markets including Australia, the UK, Spain, Poland, Chile, Hong Kong, Türkiye, Brazil, Mexico, New Zealand, and Saudi Arabia. Its businesses span beyond health insurance to hospitals and clinics, dental care, digital health, and aged care.

But what interested me was not simply the scale of the organisation. It was its purpose.

Why Bupa?

In some of my earlier writings, I have reflected on purpose, excellence, and the idea of using our work to create an impact beyond ourselves. These are themes I have also explored through my book 📕Jagjeevan.

Bupa’s purpose is:

“Helping people live longer, healthier, happier lives and making a better world.”

That purpose resonates strongly with how I think about the role of technology and engineering.

Bupa serves millions of people globally through its healthcare services. It also operates as a company limited by guarantee rather than having shareholders. This means its profits is reinvested into the organisation and healthcare for the future.

There is also a strong recognition that people’s health is connected to the health of the planet, with sustainability and climate action forming an important part of its broader responsibility.

For me, this creates an interesting intersection of purpose, technology, engineering, and impact. and that is what makes this journey particularly meaningful.

Bupa Capability Centre (BCC), India

The Bupa Capability Centre (BCC), India, based in Gurugram, is growing as a technology and capability hub supporting Bupa’s global businesses.

For me, this creates an exciting opportunity to contribute to building a strong engineering culture, developing capabilities, nurturing talent, and helping technology teams solve meaningful problems at scale.

One of the pillars I have carried throughout my career is engineering excellence. I see BCC as an opportunity to explore what that means in a global healthcare organisation—and to help turn that thinking into everyday engineering practices.

The journey begins — Day 1

And finally, the journey begins.

My first day started with a warm welcome from the BCC team and a global town hall that gave me a glimpse into the organisation’s direction.

One theme stood out clearly: becoming a more data-first organisation, with AI accelerating that journey.

For engineering, this creates an exciting space to work on foundational capabilities, platforms, developer experience, and both internal and customer-facing experiences. There are also plenty of interesting problems waiting to be explored—and I suspect they will keep me busy for quite some time!

My focus will be on building strong engineering teams, nurturing talent, strengthening engineering practices, and creating an environment where people can do their best work.

And as always, I look forward to learning from others along the way, continue collaborating with the wider technology ecosystem—industry peers, partners, academia, and the many people who share an interest in building better technology and engineering organisations.
