In a nod to my book,📕 Exploring the Metaverse: Redefining Reality in the Digital Age I initially used the phrase “Exploring the metaverse is our next reality.” But after reading Our Next Reality, I’ve adapted this to “Exploring the AI-powered Metaverse is our next reality,” to capture how AI will shape our immersive future.

As an author, I naturally drew comparisons between this masterpiece and my own work. Here are a few of my key takeaways from Our Next Reality:

🧠 Evolution of Intelligence

Alvin’s and Louis’s perspectives converge on the evolution of intelligence, covering the journey from basic AI systems to LLMs, and onward toward AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) and ASI (Artificial Super Intelligence). Alvin shares forward-looking use cases, while Louis counters with the challenges, emphasizing responsible development. While my book begins with human and technological evolution, Our Next Reality brings focus to the evolution of intelligence and its pervasive impact on our lives.

In Part 3 of my book, I cover the metaverse across sectors, from gaming and entertainment to healthcare, education, and industry. Similarly, Our Next Reality explores AI-driven applications, from virtual sales agents that redefine marketing to AI-powered teachers and healthcare providers.

The book delves deeply into privacy, security, and the future of emotional intelligence. AI’s capabilities extend to sensing beyond human perception—seeing, hearing, and interpreting emotions we might not consciously reveal. The book touches on Universal Basic Income (UBI) and the notion of an economy of abundance, where content, production, and consumption will be accessible to all. It brought to mind the film Kalki 2898 AD, where people survive in a dystopian society yet thrive in a world of abundance by earning credits to access a richer life.

In this setting, the metaverse could allow us to accomplish what’s impossible in reality, fostering creativity and freedom from traditional boundaries.

🧬 Optimizing the Humanity Out of Humanity

While AI promises unprecedented productivity, there’s a concern it may “optimize the humanity out of humanity.” With AI trained on human data, it’s critical to keep humans in the loop to retain core values. The book explores the geopolitical implications of an AI-powered metaverse and the potential of swarm intelligence to foster a collective superintelligence.

Just as I emphasize development practices, standards, and policies in Exploring the Metaverse, Our Next Reality speaks to our role in creating a balanced future. The book presents six basic rights for the metaverse, striving for an achievable utopia where tech enhances well-being. The authors share insights for policymakers, developers, industry leaders, and others on building a responsible, equitable metaverse.
