How Small, How Big: Seeing Life Through the Lens of the Universe
- 5 minutes read - 1002 wordsAfter a few hectic months, I recently visited a camping site with my family — a truly refreshing experience being close to nature. The trip was hosted by Camp Gopika and accompanied by Astrostop, adding a unique touch to our stay.
The serene environment gave me time to reflect on life and also work on the final touches of my upcoming book, 📕 “Jagjeevan – Living Larger than Life”, which tells the story of my great-grandfather and his belief that travel is essential for learning and introspection.

Experiencing the vastness of nature — the stars, sky, and mountains through the lens of Astrostop — inspired me to think deeply about the idea of “How Small, How Big” in every aspect of life, appreciating both our humble place and the limitless possibilities around us.
Watching the Universe with Astrostop
Astrostop’s camping site nestled deep in the forest. The air was calm, the food delicious, and the bonfire filled with laughter and stories. The kids loved the activities — especially the rocket-making sessions by the Astroverse team.
The most magical moment came when we watched the universe through their telescopes — planets, the moon, the Milky Way, and countless stars sparkling across the sky. The Astrostop experts explained constellations, planets, and cosmic distances. When we look at the stars, we are actually looking into the past state — some light traveling millions of years before reaching us. From those stars ★, they see the earth with dinosaurs walking its surface.
As we gazed into the night sky, I couldn’t help but reflect on how small we are in the grand cosmos, yet how big our world is in its purpose, design, and diversity.
From one perspective,
our Earth is tiny — barely a dot in the vast universe filled with billions of galaxies, each holding billions of stars and perhaps countless planets.
Yet, from another perspective,
the mother Earth is enormously big- a perfectly balanced system that sustains life in the most remarkable ways. The precise mix of oxygen that allows us to breathe but doesn’t ignite fires; The exact distance from the Sun that gives us warmth without burning us; Gravity that anchors us; an atmosphere that shields us; and a water cycle that sustains every living being. Within this small blue planet lies an entire universe of its own — vibrant, complex, and full of life.
Space opens the doors to imagination and curiosity. While experiencing it and engaging with the Astroverse team , I was delighted to see their excitement about my book — 📕 Exploring the Metaverse: Redefining Reality in the Digital Age — and our work at Thoughtworks on the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) project, where technology meets humanity’s timeless quest to explore the unknown.
Now let’s apply How small, How big — both at once, in different aspects of life.
Applying “How Small, How Big” in Life
Let’s look at different aspects of life through the lens of “How Small, How Big”.
How Small, How Big - Problems
Who doesn’t have problems in life? In fact, not having one might itself be a problem!
Assess your worries with WhyWorry framework here.
The key is to understand their true scale and impact — just as Earth looks massive when we stand on it, but small from space. Every problem feels big in the moment, but when we step back, we see how small it is in the grand story of life.
No problem is so big that it cannot be faced - be strong and face it, and no problem is so small that it can be ignored - face it before it becomes big.
How Small, How Big - Achievements
When we achieve something, it’s easy to get carried away — forgetting to appreciate others or even hurting someone unintentionally. No matter how big our achievement feels, it’s still small in the larger canvas of life. Many have achieved before us, many are achieving now, and many will surpass us. Celebrate your success, but stay humble — no achievement is too small to acknowledge or too big to lose kindness over.
How Small, How Big - My Plans & Goals
Goals give direction, but obsession with them can make us miss life’s little moments — family, friends, peace, and joy. Remember, no goal is so big that it cannot change, and no dream is so small that it can be ignored. Plans guide us, not bind us.
How Small, How Big - I / We / Family
Sometimes “I”, “we” or “my family” become the center of our world. It’s important to care deeply, but also to see beyond. We’re part of a greater ecosystem — of people, nature, and the universe itself. However small we are in the vastness around us, we’re still big enough to make a positive difference.
How Small, How Big - My Team / Organization/ Designation
Leading/Building a large team or working in a big organization can make us feel significant, but even the biggest structures are tiny in the grand scale of life. What truly matters is not size, but impact — the positive mark we leave on people and the world around us.
How Small, How Big - My Society / Country
It’s natural to feel proud of our society or nation, its progress and power. But we must also remember — in the vastness of the Earth and the universe, we are all equal travelers, destined to leave everything behind one day. No one is too great to stay forever, and no one is too small to matter.
Similarly, we may apply this How Small, How Big lens to our work, career, health, wealth, relationships, possessions and more.
